Creed

Creed (2015)

Dir. Ryan Coogler

Creed understands that legacy is about more than inheriting a name.

Adonis Johnson has spent his entire life trying to outrun the shadow of his father, Apollo Creed, while simultaneously wanting to prove that he belongs in the same world. What I love most is that the film never makes his journey solely about becoming a great boxer. It’s about figuring out who he is when the expectations attached to his family name are stripped away.

Michael B. Jordan gives Adonis an intensity that makes his ambition feel personal rather than generic. He’s angry, insecure, talented, and sometimes self-destructive. Then there’s Rocky, who gets to exist as something more complicated than the mentor role we expect from him. Their relationship becomes one of the emotional anchors of the film.

And Ryan Coogler knows how to shoot boxing. The fights feel physical and immediate, especially that famous one-take sequence that makes you feel like you're right there in the ring.

Creed could have easily been a nostalgia-driven continuation of the Rocky franchise. Instead, it gives the story a new heartbeat.
