No Strings Attached (2011)
Dir. Ivan Reitman
I miss when romantic comedies were allowed to be this unserious.
No Strings Attached is absolutely not reinventing the genre. It’s Ashton Kutcher and Natalie Portman having sex, catching feelings, pretending they don’t have feelings, and then inevitably realizing they have feelings. And honestly? Sometimes that’s all I need.
There’s something so distinctly early-2010s about this movie that makes it feel like a little time capsule. The raunchy jokes, the awkward texting, the obnoxious friends, the unnecessarily complicated rules of a casual relationship. It belongs to that era when Hollywood rom-coms could be silly without needing to apologize for being silly.
Natalie Portman is particularly funny because watching her play someone who is aggressively committed to emotional detachment is completely against the serious roles I usually associate with her.
Is it predictable? Of course.
Is chemistry revolutionary? Not really.
Did I still have fun? Absolutely.
I genuinely miss cheeky 2000s/early-2010s rom-coms. Give me the mediocre apartment, the quirky best friend, the sex montage, and the inevitable airport confession. I will eat it up every single time.
