The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013)

Dir. Francis Lawrence

Catching Fire is easily my favorite of The Hunger Games series.

What makes it work so well is that Katniss finally understands that the Games were never just about survival. She has become a symbol, and the Capitol is terrified of what that symbol represents. The second arena is also a huge improvement visually and narratively, with each section of the environment feeling like its own little trap.

Jennifer Lawrence is especially good here because Katniss feels increasingly exhausted by everything being projected onto her. She doesn’t want to be a revolutionary icon. She wants to survive and protect the people she loves, and the fact that the Capitol keeps turning her into something larger than herself is what makes her so compelling.

And honestly, the cast is STACKED. Finnick, Johanna, Mags, Beetee, Wiress... suddenly the Games have personalities beyond Katniss and Peeta.

Catching Fire also has one of the best endings in the franchise. Katniss realizing that the arena itself is part of a larger rebellion and then getting pulled out? Cinema.

This is the one I’d happily rewatch.
